I wish my mom had known about dump cakes when I was growing up. She’s the first to admit she is not a baker and prefers savoury over sweet. However, my dad has a huge sweet tooth and relies on home-canned fruit and ice cream for his dessert fix.
If you are like my mom and are ‘not a baker’, this cake recipe is perfect for you and all the sweet lovers in your family! You literally just dump the ingredients into a glass baking dish and throw it in the oven. The only rule when it comes to dump cake recipes is NO STIRRING!
The fresh peaches and sugar mix together to make a sweet, slightly sour layer below the sweet and buttery cake layer. Speaking of buttery cake layers, pouring the melted butter over the cake mix before baking results in a dappled cake surface or ‘cobbler’ effect.
What is a Dump Cake?
Dump cake. It doesn’t really sound that appealing, does it? Despite the name, this Peach Cobbler Dump Cake is delicious, especially since it contains fresh peaches! This dump cake recipe sits in the same realm as ‘Impossible Pie’ recipes. They are both recipes that don’t make sense but always work out. It’s baking magic.
Most dump cake recipes consist of a bottom canned fruit layer like cherry pie filling in a classic cherry dump cake or the pineapple chunks in a pineapple dump cake. However, you can also use fresh fruit mixed with a sprinkling of sugar and/or baking spices (such as cinnamon).
This fruity layer is then sprinkled with a dry cake mix, either vanilla cake or yellow cake, followed by a drizzle of melted butter.
The total cook time is always less than 60 minutes (unless you make it in a slow cooker) so it’s ready to eat right after family dinner is done. The idea is to eat it wbedürftig with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt.
Ingredients for Peach Cobbler Dump Cake
This easy no-fuss recipe calls for the convenience of a boxed cake mix. As such, I highly recommend keeping a store-bought cake mix and a can of fruit in heavy syrup in the pantry in case of dessert ’emergencies’.
- Cake Mix
This recipe was tested using fresh peaches. However, you can also use canned peaches in heavy syrup instead. If you do, please omit the portion of sugar. Sprinkle the peaches with cinnamon as directed. Feel free to use granulated white sugar or brown sugar in this recipe.
Note that there are some discrepancies regarding the size of boxed cake mixes. Some mixes may come in 14 oz (396 g) size while others contain up to 2 oz more cake mix. This recipe was tested with a 16 oz (451 g) ‘super moist’ vanilla cake mix.
Use the same amount of butter for cake mixes made for 9 x 13 pans, regardless of the volume of cake mix.
How to Make a Peach Cobbler Dump Cake
Preheat oven to 350. Next, use your fingers to smear a tablespoon of butter along the bottom and sides of a 9 x 13 glass baking dish.
Prepare the peaches by slicing them in half, removing the pit and skins. Finally, slice each peach half into 4-5 slices.
Arrange the peach slices in prepared baking dish then sprinkle ground cinnamon and sugar all over the layer of fresh peach slices.
Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over the peach layer. If needed, use a fork to gently even out the cake mix layer but do not mix it into the fruit filling. Alternatively, give the pan a little shake and tap to allow the dry ingredients to settle evenly.
Finally pour the melted butter all over the cake mix layer. Try to add it as evenly as you can but don’t worry if there are dry patches. These end up being the ‘cobbler’ part of the peach dump cake.
Bake in a 350F oven for 40 minutes.
Serve wbedürftig with ice cream, vanilla frozen yogurt, or vanilla yogurt.
Useful Tips for Making Dump Cake
I consider this dump cake a ‘no-fail’ recipe and I’m sending it to my mom as soon as this post goes live. However, there are some simple tips and tricks you might want to keep in mind when making this recipe.
The first (and only) rule of dump cake is DON’T STIR THE DUMP CAKE. This rule is so important that I had to mention it twice. Stirring the cake will affect the final texture so all you really need to do is layer the ingredients in the pan as directed. You’ve got this!
For those who like more of a challschmale, feel free to replace the store-bought cake mix with your own 9 x 13 yellow or white cake recipe. Omit any eggs or milk and add butter as directed in this recipe.
To elevate this cake further, use fresh or frozen fruit instead of canned. For example, a bag of frozen blueberries would make a great base layer for a blueberry dump cake.
Finally, try adding chopped nuts for a little bit of texture. For this peach cobbler dump cake, I highly suggest adding 1/2 – 3/4 cup of chopped pecans.
How Long Do Leftovers Last?
If you have leftover Peach Cobbler Dump Cake, allow it to cool to room temperature then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. It will keep in the fridge for 4-5 days. I suggest reheating leftovers in the microwave because this dessert is best served wbedürftig.
